Creative Psychotherapy
(aka) Expressive Arts Therapy
In Expressive Arts Therapy the creative process becomes the pathway to emotional health, mental wellbeing and personal development. A creative medium or art-form is used as a vehicle for emotional self-expression, interaction and change.
For Any Age
Creativity as a strategy boosts Mental Wellbeing. Expressing inner experiences and feelings through creative mediums promotes the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social well-being of individuals of all ages.
How is it different to ‘talk therapy’?
Sometimes, words alone are not enough to convey the complexity of our thoughts and emotions. A creative approach to therapy offers an enhanced means to understanding and expressing your own inner experiences and feelings. Engaging in creative therapy brings about outcomes that go beyond traditional ‘talk therapy’. Specific to Marie’s Practice a variety of mediums are available to utilize including but not limited to images, objects, writing, sounds, movement, and storytelling.
It’s not about art-making
There is no expectation to be creative. Nor is it mandatory to produce ‘a piece of art’. The creative mediums available will only be applied as and when you feel comfortable to do so. The creative resources available are there as mere catalysts and you may decide on a particular day that you would prefer not to use any. There maybe times when you would prefer to only talk. There is no right or wrong way.
There is no ‘typical’ therapy session since each will be tailored to the individual. The client’s needs, wishes, and/or preferences may provide direction. Beginning and ending a session can facilitate the opportunities to tune-into your sensory and physical body. Time is given to explore an issue/thought/emotion through expressive means. We will reflect on what has come up for you. I may ask some open-ended or clarifying questions to facilitate your personal exploration. Where appropriate I may suggest resources or articles to further your personal growth.
